The One on the Right Is on the Left

Richard Nixon hätte es gerne gehabt, wenn ihm Johnny Cash Okie from Muskogee vorgesungen hätte, aber the Man in Black tat ihm nicht den Gefallen. Er antwortete auf Nixons Vorschläge: I don’t know those songs. But I got a few of my own I can play for you. Nixon hielt Okie from Muskogee  für die Hymne der rednecks, in Wirklichkeit war der Song wohl eher ironisch gemeint. Amerikas populäre Musik ist nicht leicht einzuordnen. Wir haben Janis Joplins Me and Bobby McGee, aber wir haben auch Tom Paxton:

Lyndon Johnson told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
I am trying everyone to please
Though it isn't really war
We're sending fifty thousand more
To help save Vietnam from the Vietnamese

Doch die Zeiten von Tom Paxton und Phil Ochs, von Buffy Sainte-Marie und Joan Baez sind vorbei, die Politik scheint aus der populären Musik verschwunden. Country music has become apolitical titelte der Guardian. Einer der Gründe für die neue Zurückhaltung heißt Dixie Chicks. Als die Band vor Jahren Kritik an Regierung und Präsidenten äußerte, sendeten die Radios ihre Songs nicht mehr. Country Music, Politics & the Lingering Fear of 'Getting Dixie Chicked' hieß eine Schlagzeile. Hannes Wader widerfuhr das gleiche Schicksal, als seine DKP Zugehörigkeit bekannt wurde, konnte man im NDR seine Songs nicht mehr hören.

Now this should be a lesson if you plan to start a folk group
Don't go mixin' politics with the folk songs of our land
Just work on harmony and diction
Play your banjo well
And if you have political convictions keep them to yourself

Das sang Johnny Cash 1965 in The One on the Right Is on the Left, aber politisch rechts war er nie. Johnny Cash war schon sehr krank, und als eine jüngere Generation (hier seine Tochter mit ihrem Vater) ihre und seine großen Songs sang, kämpfte er mit den Tränen.
