Der niederländische Maler Jan van Goyen ist am 27. April 1656 in Den Haag gestorben. Der deutsche Wikipedia Artikel zu van Goyen ist dürftig, dabei ist er einer der wichtigsten Vertreter dessen, was man das Goldene Zeitalter der holländischen Malerei nennt. Das hat nun im Gegensatz zu van Goyen einen sehr guten Artikel bei Wikipedia. Der Landschaftsmaler van Goyen war sehr produktiv, man schätzt, dass er mehr als tausend Bilder gemalt hat. Erstaunlicherweise hinterließ er bei seinem Tod einen Schuldenberg, das würde Malern wie Gerhard Richter oder Neo Rauch wohl nicht passieren.

Ein Bild von Richter ist vor Jahren bei Sotheby's für 21.3 Millionen Pfund verkauft worden, Bilder von Neo Rauch bringen auch anderthalb Millionen Euro. Einen van Goyen kann man dagegen schon für 100.000 Euro bekommen. Es ist eine seltsame Welt. Ich habe heute ein schönes kleines Gedicht, das Poem on Jan van Goyen's 'River Scene' heißt, aber ich weiß wenig über den Autor. Er heißt Jonathan Towers, und das Gedicht findet sich in seinem Gedichtband Westport Poems.

Dort findet sich auch einiges über sein Leben: 1948 in New York geboren, Studium von Literatur und Anthropologie an fünf verschiedenen Universitäten, hervorragende Studienleistungen, aber nie ein Examen. Am besten könnte man sein Leben mit der Figur des Robert Eroica Dupea beschreiben, den Jack Nicholson in dem Film Five Easy Pieces spielt. Der deutsche Filmtitel war ✺ Ein Mann auf der Suche nach sich selbst. Jonathan David Tower litt unter schweren Depressionen und hat sich 2005 umgebracht. Er hasste Autos und ging sein Leben lang zu Fuß. 1992 war er nach Westport in Connecticut gezogen, wo er jeden Tag die Küste entlang wanderte und in Westport, Darien, Bridgeport, Fairfield und Camden auftauchte. Man nannte ihn The Walker.

Was er auf seinen Wanderungen sah, schrieb er in seine Westport Poems. Jonathan Towers composed brief, emotionally evocative poems until his suicide in 2005 after years of struggle with mental illness. His work was fueled by reading and a rich inner life exploring the tarot, medieval history, courtly love and relationship, and the pre-Socratic philosophers. These poems beautifully evoke a sense of place, while also powerfully critiquing the forces of modern life that threaten it, hat sein Verlag auf das Buch geschrieben. Und das trifft es, dieses Heraufbeschwören eines sense of place findet sich ja immer wieder in der amerikanischen Literatur, ob wir Faulkner, Padgett Powell oder Harry Crews nehmen. Und wenn man jeden Tag den Long Island Sound vor Augen hat, dann sind einem die Holländer vielleicht sehr nahe:
